Big travel trends of the future

Read what the heads of the world's leading travel companies think about the development of the industry for the next few decades.

World Travel Market is an annual gathering of the entire global travel industry. To celebrate its birthday, Travel Daily News International asked a number of managers and industry experts what they think will shape travel and tourism around the world over the next few decades. Among other things, the respondents believe in sports tourism, underwater travel, mobile hotels and accommodation in private homes.

- Sports tourism will become big in the next 10-20 years. We are looking to secure major sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup. This aims to attract tourists throughout the year, increase visitor numbers and improve the lives of all South Africans," says Didi Moyle, CEO of South African Tourism.

World Travel Market Chairman Fiona Jeffrey agrees:

- Sports tourism is really taking off now and I think over the next 30 years this sector will be heavily promoted.

Thomas Cook CEO Manny Fontenla-Novoa wants to be able to holiday underwater in the future:

- I am calling for technology that will allow travel and relaxation below the surface of the sea. There are many beautiful and unknown things here. Just think of the opportunities that will open up!

Director of the Caribbean Tourism Organization of Great Britain Carol Hay believes that in the future it is worth investing in accommodation in private homes.

- Over the next few decades, we will try to get more locals to open their homes to tourists. This type of tourism attracts ethically conscious travellers as it can strengthen the local economy.

Fiona Jeffrey from World Travel Market offers suggestions on how hotels of the future can become more ethical.

- Hotels should be temporary, mobile or easily relocatable if they are set up in places where they could harm the environment or society, she says.

Marriott International President, Ed Fuller, is one of many who believe that hotel guests will demand more personalized service and facilitation in the coming years.

- The tourists of the future will demand that the hotel experience be tailored to their personal interests. It will also become increasingly important that the latest technology is available in the hotel.

As we can see, the variability of tourism is only increasing, which gives new opportunities to explore the world. Travel and discover more!
